Professor Margaret “Peg” Strobel of Chicago, Illinois, won the 2008 “Write Women Back into History” Award given  by the National Women’s History Project of Santa Rosa, California.

Peg is a longtime feminist activist and former UIC women's studies professor. She is also on the Board of the Herstory Project and has helped us out many times from behind the scenes . If we gave out prizes, Peg would certainly get one.

 

The WE-ACTx Girls Exchange Chicago↔Kigali is an exciting program to link a group of six young women from our WE-ACTx HIV clinics in Kigali, Rwanda with six young women from Chicago. The group will include HIV infected and uninfected youth from both cities who have demonstrated the capacity for leadership.

As part of its Women's History Month celebration the Chicago History Museum will feature a program on March 6th called "Women On The Move: We Can Do It!" Among the presenters will be Suzanne Davenport of the CWLU Herstory Project . Suzanne was active in the Chicago Women's Liberation Union and has been a film maker and educational reformer.

Suzanne will be joined by Mary Ann Johnson of the Chicago Area Women's History Council and other presenters.

Gertrude (Trudy) Alma Pax, 70, died February 9, 2008, of pancreatic cancer, at her home at Camphill Village Minnesota. Trudy was born March 9, 1937 in Celina, Ohio to Gertrude (Jenniges) and Leo Pax and was the youngest of eight children. Raised on a farm, Trudy attended college at Marquette University, Milwaukee, and graduated with a degree in sociology. After working with a service organization in Brazil for four years, Trudy moved to Chicago and continued her involvement in social justice and political activism. Trudy worked in the steel mills in Chicago from 1975-1980. She married Tom Farr in 1974. Nic was born in 1981 and Daniel joined the family in 1983 when he was 3 years old. Trudy received a master’s degree in ESL and taught adult education classes.

UPDATE FRIDAY, February 8, 2008 : A very, very quiet day. Trudy isn't speaking much anymore and ice chip consumption has lessened.

We have sad news about Trudy Pax, one of our CWLU sisters. We received this information from Caring Bridge, which connects critically ill people to their friends, family, and associates around the world.

Several months ago, Trudy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Almost immediately, Trudy made plans to go to Europe to visit some close friends. Upon her return, she started chemotherapy. Although there is no 'cure' for pancreatic cancer, chemo treatments can help shrink the tumor, which can reduce pain, increase appetite, etc.
